A letter from the owner:
Hello! I am Kathrine Christ, the owner and head trainer of Hands Full Dog Training.
My vision is to help pet dog owners enjoy living with their dogs. It’s wonderful to have so many options for dog sports, competition, or therapy work in the Wichita area, but I hope to provide something a little different – services tuned to families of all kinds who need a little help teaching their dog to become a well mannered family dog.
It’s not as easy as it sounds!
I know from my years of experience managing the behavior and training department of an animal rescue that dealing with a brand new puppy or solving behavior problems can be much more frustrating and difficult than just teaching a dog to “heel pretty” for three minutes! But as a mother of four human children and a former doggy foster mom, this niche truly calls to me, and I’m ready to help you walk through the difficult times and find success.
I hope that by teaching new puppies to be confident and obedient, helping get adult dogs or rescued pups back on track to polite behavior, and helping parents solve conflicts between their dogs and their human kids, I can also help keep dogs in their homes and keep owners happy and confident that their dog really can fit into the family.
How can I help?
To meet your goals, I offer a diverse range of services – from private consultations to family education presentations to group classes – all focused on the single notion of helping families and dogs find harmony together. You can click to find more details on private training and group classes as well as dog and child integration services.
What are my qualifications?
Because the dog training industry is completely unregulated, it’s important to find a practitioner that is not only a “dog person”, but has been formally trained in the field. I have an academic background in behavior – a B.A. in Psychology specializing in animal behavior – and I am an honors graduate of The Academy for Dog Trainers, a rigorous two year trade school that trains top quality practitioners. But you don’t have to take my word for it – I am also an Associate Certified Dog Behavior Consultant through the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, which requires hundreds of hours of experience as well as a board-reviewed application including case studies, theory, and practical knowledge.
But am I a dog person, too? Well, yes! I’ve been teaching dog training classes since 2003, helping over 2,000 dogs learn good manners. I have also supervised service dog puppy raisers for a nonprofit and trained my own dogs to earn titles including Canine Good Citizen, Therapy Dog, and sports titles from agility, rally, and obedience. This stuff works in the real world!
Because of my specialty in child-dog interactions, I also went through a certification course to become a licensed Family Paws Parent Educator, presenting the Dogs & Storks® and Dogs & Toddlers™ programs for Family Paws Parent Education.
Choosing the most effective, up to date techniques is important to me, so even with this street cred on my side, I maintain ongoing education in animal behavior and base all of my recommendations on the latest scientific research in the field.
I’m here for you!
Founding Hands Full Dog Training has been the start of my commitment to serve as a community resource for all of Wichita’s family dogs, and I hope to have the opportunity to work with yours soon!
